Burgess Park v SPCC

Our first game of the season was certainly not our greatest...

We started well enough as the hosts batted first and 'golden arm' Graham got their opener with the second ball of the second over of their innings, caught by 'bucket hands' John. Things took a downward turn after that as the next pair at the crease put on 93 in 15 overs which mainly came from their number 3, Ruben, who made 73. After Richard broke the partnership, bowling their other opener and Tom caught Ruben off Martin's bowling they were 117-3 off 19 overs and it seemed we were still in the game. We manage to polish off their innings fairly quickly thanks to a couple more wickets from Graham and a phenomenal second spell by Ibrahim with 3-5 in 1.3 overs including two wickets in three balls to finish it. However, they manage to scrape 39 more runs to finish their innings 156 all out in the 28h over.

After a great tea we begin our reply which is an instant disaster as Joe and Tom both fall in the first over to leave us 3-2. Next man Ibrahim goes in the fourth over and we are 9-3 which soon becomes 17-5 after John and Umair depart. Martin offers the most resistance with 24 but he and Dan (11) are out in successive overs leaving us on 51-7 in only 14 overs. To their credit, the last pair stay at the crease for another 9 overs until Graham (13) is the last man out leaving Richard not out at the end and we fold for only 75 losing by 81 runs in 23 overs. This is by far our heaviest defeat batting second. We dropped too many catches and let them get too many runs before we even started batting...
