Burgess Park CC vs Southwark Park CC - The Guvnor's Cup

This fixture was to have been on Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August at Southwark Park but unfortunately the gamer and the other events in the park were completely washed out by the dreadful weather. So we play the rearranged fixture at Burgess Park.

We win the toss and the skipper decides to have a bowl. We do get another grass strip to play on, but the pitch is not the greatest and could've done with a decent rolling if not being completely re-laid...

Charlie and Dave open and both find early success as they dismiss both openers without scoring. Charlie has Aqib caught by Shak and Dave bowls Felix. Numbers three and four stick around for considerably longer as they put on a decent partnership and we begin to toil. Eventually Martin has Samat caught by Nick for 32 and Shak bowls Atif for 35 and then follows up by getting Ruben for a duck.

Charlie comes back for a second spell and comprehensively cleans up the tail with only one of the final six batsmen reaching double figures. Josh goes LBW for 8. Norman, Tariq and White are bowled for 9, 13 and a duck respectively leaving Luke not out 2. The hosts are bowled out for a Nelson. 111-9 (as they only have ten men) in 23 overs. A very good result for us and particularly Charlie with the club's first 5 wicket haul and stunning figures of 5 overs, no maidens, 5 for 10. But we know that batting on this pitch will not be easy.

After the break in which the Sarsaparilla on offer divides opinions sharply we begin our innings with Tom and Nick opening. We reach 15-1 off 3 overs before Nick is out caught Ruben bowled Felix for 4. From here on things start to go wrong. Adam is out for 2 bowled Felix and then Tom is caught and bowled by the same bowler for 16. Meanwhile Dave is playing himself in nicely as Martin comes to the crease. We still have a bit of batting to go and plenty of overs left so we're not out of it yet. Shortly afterwards Martin somehow manages to get bat and pad entangled and is stumped off the bowling of Ruben for 1 leaving the innings in tatters at 31-4 off 8 overs. New player Rohan joins Dave and they begin to build a partnership which seems to get us back on track for a bit.

We begin to look like we might just pull this off but then Dave goes for 31 bowled Ruben with the score on 69-5. Then Charlie comes in at number 7. Rohan is going quite well but is eventually bowled by Samat for 11 with the score on 77-6. We are getting closer with 19 to win off 4 overs with 3 wickets left. By the end of the over Charlie is caught off the bowling of Felix for 22 and we need 17 to win off 3 overs. Shak and Stewart are now at the crease. Stewart goes for 2 caught and bowled for 2 and last man Dan comes in with 13 needed to win. Shak takes a single. 12 to win. Dan knocks it into space and sets off for an easy run. As he passes Shak he clearly calls "two there" and turns for a second, completing the run only to turn and see Shak stranded a long way out of his ground run out and our innings ends on 100.

We have lost our unbeaten record and the Guvnor's cup. But it was a good match and Burgess Park were good hosts. The cup is presented to the winning captain after the game and a lovely tea is provided. Charlie is Man of the Match for 5-10 and 22.
